AI Readiness Assessment: Is Your SA Business Ready to Implement AI?

Before buying AI tools, score your business across four dimensions. Most SA SMEs are closer to ready than they think — just not in the dimensions they expect. This assessment takes 10 minutes and gives you a clear output: ready, mostly ready, or not yet.
AI Readiness for South African Businesses: The 4-Dimension Framework
AI readiness for a South African business is determined by four factors: data quality (do you have structured data to feed AI tools?), people readiness (is your team open to change and digitally literate?), process clarity (do you have documented workflows AI can assist with?), and technology foundation (internet connectivity, cloud tools, and a basic data security policy). Most SA SMEs score high on people readiness and process clarity but low on data structure and technology foundation. The good news: you don't need high readiness across all four to start. You need medium readiness across two — typically process clarity and people readiness — to run a productive first AI pilot.
How to Score Your Business (0–3 per dimension, 12 total)
Score each dimension honestly. There are no wrong answers — this is for your planning, not a sales pitch.
Dimension 1 — Data Readiness
| Score | Your Situation |
|---|---|
| 3 | Customer data in a CRM, financial data in accounting software, structured digital files |
| 2 | Data exists but partly in spreadsheets, partly in email, partly on paper |
| 1 | Data mostly in email and paper, no central system |
| 0 | No digital data systems at all |
Note: Most AI tools don't require your data — they work with inputs you give them. Data readiness matters more for advanced AI (custom models, analytics) than for starting tools like ChatGPT.
Dimension 2 — People Readiness
| Score | Your Situation |
|---|---|
| 3 | Team is curious and open, at least 2–3 people have tried AI tools personally |
| 2 | Team is cautious but not resistant, leadership is supportive |
| 1 | Team is skeptical, leadership is uncertain |
| 0 | Active resistance from leadership or critical staff |
Key insight: People readiness is the most underestimated factor — most SA implementations stall here, not at technology. If your score is 0–1, address change management before selecting tools.
Dimension 3 — Process Readiness
| Score | Your Situation |
|---|---|
| 3 | Documented workflows for main processes; staff follow repeatable procedures |
| 2 | Some processes documented, others informal but consistent |
| 1 | Most processes informal, vary by person |
| 0 | No documented processes; everything is ad hoc |
Dimension 4 — Technology Foundation
| Score | Your Situation |
|---|---|
| 3 | Stable internet with mobile data backup, cloud tools (M365 or Google Workspace), basic IT security policy |
| 2 | Cloud tools but inconsistent internet; or good internet but no formal security policy |
| 1 | Some cloud tools, persistent load-shedding internet issues, no IT policy |
| 0 | Paper-based, local servers only, no cloud tools |
Load shedding note: Cloud-based AI tools survive load shedding if you have mobile data as a backup. LTE/5G backup is worth adding before full AI rollout.
What Your Total Score Means
| Score | Readiness | Recommended Next Step |
|---|---|---|
| 9–12 | Ready | Start a pilot in one department this month |
| 6–8 | Mostly Ready | Run a structured AI workshop first, then pilot |
| 3–5 | Not Yet | Fix the lowest-scoring dimension first (usually Data or Technology) |
| 0–2 | Foundation First | Build digital operations foundation before AI tools |
